Geek: Antivirus and Firewall suggestions.
I've been using ZoneAlarm (older) and McAfee. I had to uninstall ZoneAlarm as the version I had tended to lock up the machine (frequently while I've unsaved work). Supposedly this bug has been fixed in a later version of Zone Alarm, now I'm currently using the one built into Windows (not great I realize).

Now the Antivirus is starting to bug me and it's subscription has run out. While running in the background it tends to consume a ton of resources and not relenquish it, which makes working on the machine painful.

I'm thinking about going back to ZoneAlarm which now has virus checking built in, and seems rated okay

Any suggestions?

Symantec Corporate Antivirus 8.1 or 9.0. 10 blows chunks. So does McAfee. I can't recommend ZoneAlarm because I've never been impressed with it. I also haven't used it in a couple years, either, so my viewpoint is likely jaded.

After an anti-virus drama, I have been using AVG and it has been superb, even finding viruses etc that norton had gone through. You can get a free version or a professional one which is half the price of the of Norton and McAfee. It also works very well with ZoneAlarm too and doesn't clog up my machine!

For the firewall, I suggest Kerio. It has pretty much the same features as ZoneAlarm -- but it is more stable.

We installed Zone Alarm on two machines in the past couple of months, and it works fine.

As far as antivirus we use AVG Free and it's great too. (I just hooked my kids' computer up to the internet for the first time in 2 years and it found 6 Trojan horses, YOW!) It's a little hard to find, as they want you to buy their full version, but it works just fine.
